Your domain name is as important to promoting your corporate identity as your business brand itself, and securing the best possible domain for your page can play a big role in its success.

The following 5 tips can guide you in choosing an effective name for your website. Keep them in your memory or refer to them whenever you need them!

1. The key is brevity!

The simplest way for a visitor to reach your site is by typing your domain directly into the address bar of their browser. Make it easy for your website visitors by choosing a short and concise domain. Try to never exceed 20 characters. Remember – the smaller the better!

2. Choose the simple and obvious

Your domain is essentially the “name” of your site. This name should be easy to remember as well as easy to pronounce if you need to verbally convey it to a third party.

If your site is a portfolio of your work or a personal website, use your first and last name as the address. Are you creating a website for your business? Turn her brand into a domain!

3. Avoid numeric characters and dashes

Sometimes it is not possible to follow the previous advice, because the domain you would like to register is already registered by someone else. For example, let’s say you own a hair salon called “Militsa”. The obvious choice for your domain name is hairsalonmilitsa.gr.

But what happens in the case that somewhere else out there in the world there is another Militsa hair salon and they have already registered this domain? You could certainly try to register the domain hairsalon-militsa.gr.

But this is exactly where a problem arises – if someone gives your address, there is a possibility that a visitor to your site will later type hairsalonmilitsa.gr, without including the hyphen, which means that he will end up on a completely different site and even maybe even a competitor of yours.

Let’s not even mention the case of registering the domain hairsalonmilitsa.gr or something similar! Perhaps in this case it would be better to choose to register the domain “hairshopmilitsa” or something along those lines.

4. Focus on keywords and showcase your strengths

In case the hair salon in the above example is famous for its hair styles or hairdo, a very good alternative option would be to register a domain that displays exactly what it specializes in such as the domains “hairstylemilitsa.gr” and “hairdomilitsa.gr”.

5. Register your domain for more years

The length of time for which a domain is registered really matters. Search engines like Google check how long a name has been registered to rate your site. A registration of your domain for several years can raise your site in the ranking of search engines.

Also, when you register a domain, it becomes your property for the period of time you have registered it. When your domain expires, you can renew it or leave it free for someone else to register. By registering it for more years, you secure your ownership over it and you don’t have to worry about the expiration date of your domain for quite some time.

Don’t forget the tips above and remember that they are just a guide and not rules. If you have something different in mind for your domain and you think it suits you, register it now with MyIP web hosting!
